According to "Guide to Cruising" of Berlitz there are some cruiselines with 5-star qualification of all of their ships. This cruiselines are Crystal Cruises - Seabourn - Seadream Yacht Club - and some of Silversea. Some individual ships of Oceania and Hapag Lloyd Cruises have the 5-star qualification. The only one with five star plus is the Europa of Hapag Lloyd.
Understandably we pay a little
more attention on the
Dutch passenger - and cruiselines
of the past. The only important cruise company still alive the Holland-America
Line was originally a fully Dutch company, but from 1988 owened by Carnival
The HAL founded in 1873 as "Nederlandse Amerikaanse Stoomvaart Mij." [NASM] one of the oldest cruiseline in the world.
The funds of the sales about $ 900 milj. are used by the van der Vorm family the former owners to found an investment comp. under the name of "HAL-Investment" with financial interest in several kind of companies.
Although Carnival Corp. is now the owner of the HAL, some Dutch aspects from the past are still noticeable. For example, passengerships have Dutch names ending on "dam", as when the company was fully owned by the Dutch. At that time names of freighter ships, mostly with a limited passenger accommodation, ended on "dijk" The freight division is no longer excist. These days cruiseships are sailing under Dutch flag and registered in Rotterdam. Most service crew are from Indonesia or The Philippines and the officers, if available Dutch, or otherwise British. So you can understand that for Dutch travellers, cruising with the HAL is a little nostalgic.
In the cruiseworld of today many types of cruiseships are available. To give you a little insight into the several types we have described on seperate pages some types. The very popular "monsters of the sea" especially for the cruiselines due to lower costs and more profit called as mega ships above 100.000 tons and for 3000 passengers or more. The medium size ships between 65.000 and 100.000 ton for about 1800 to 2800 passenger for some years the big ones. By the terrible rise of the Mega - ships its repressed to the second plan now. The smaller types below 65.000 ton with a cap. of 600-1400 passengers as general. The expedition ships ships suitable for 50 -300 passengers. Many of them sailing as expedition cruises in Antarctica or the Artic area. Modern tall ships some of them gives you the feeling of real sailing. Disney ships are a paradise for your childeren. Cruises with destinations other than the current already described on this site called Specialties Cruises based on different culture such as China and Australasia.
Every type of cruise ship and practical every destination worldwide is possible! The choice is yours!
Mayby it is good to pay your attention, that some older ships from Greece - Cyprus and Eastern Europe not match adequate safety -and sanitation requirements.
